Building a New Stadium
We have built a new stadium - the Northland Events Centre in Whangarei - which will host two Pool A matches.
The new Northland Events Centre at Okara Park, Whangarei.
The Northland Events Centre is a new multi-purpose events centre that was built at Okara Park in Whangarei. It has a larger capacity than the previous facility as well as a conference and function centre and changing rooms, food and retail facilities.
The Northland Regional Council contributed $13 million and the Whangarei District Council $3 million towards the new Northland Events Centre. The Government contributed an additional $2.5 million to allow the events centre facility to meet Rugby World Cup 2011 standards.
The new Northland Events Centre is centrally located and less than two kilometres from Whangarei’s city centre.
The Northland Events Centre was completed in June 2010 and will is a world-class facility that can host a range of sporting, entertainment and cultural events. With a new stand and refurbished embankments, the Events Centre has a capacity of 20,000.
