Profiling our visitors

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) compiles and maintains updated profiles on many of the nations that are to compete at the Rugby World Cup 2011 Tournament.

 These profiles include details of:

  • key economic indicators;
  • the political landscape;
  • imports and exports;
  • sector opportunities; and
  • general cultural and business tips.
Canada

The Canadian economy is well structured and presents New Zealand exporters with excellent opportunities. It also acts as a good stepping stone into the broader North American market. Canada is an important market for New Zealand's agricultural goods, particularly beef. Exports of other agricultural products have grown and non-traditional exports, such as services, creative industries, food and beverage and tourism are increasingly important.

Japan

Japan is the world’s second largest economy, a dominant economic force in Asia, the world’s largest net importer of foodstuffs and New Zealand’s third largest export market. New Zealand exports are becoming increasingly diversified, extending beyond traditional agricultural products to education services, software and manufactured goods.

Tonga

New Zealand is a key regional partner for Tonga, with total two-way trade for the year ending December 2009 valued at NZ$55.5 million. Relations are underpinned by a shared Polynesian heritage and extensive people to-people linkages, with longstanding migration links with New Zealand resulting in a significant Tongan population in New Zealand.

International visitor activity

The Ministry of Tourism commissioned a report to develop preliminary forecasts to establish the likely levels of international visitor activity in New Zealand during Rugby World Cup 2011. These forecasts were developed through detailed analysis of past Rugby events and extensive consultation with key RWC 2011 stakeholders. The forecasts will be refined over the next 12-18 months as further information becomes available.

The primary areas of interest in undertaking these forecasts were:

  • The number of visitors attracted to New Zealand by the Rugby World Cup (inbound passenger movements) and the timing of these arrivals
  • The number of Rugby World Cup visitors in New Zealand at the various stages of the Tournament
  • The impact of the Rugby World Cup on pre and post-event travel volumes
